Festivals & Traditions

Panicale and the surrounding area host a remarkable calendar of events — from world-class chamber opera to the gloriously absurd spectacle of cheese rolling through medieval streets.

Annual Calendar

April — Ruzzolone

The day after Easter, Panicale comes alive with one of Italy's most joyfully absurd traditions: Ruzzolone, or cheese rolling. Locals roll a wheel of pecorino cheese through the steep, winding medieval lanes. Teams compete with fierce pride and much laughter. The origins are lost to time, but the spectacle is unforgettable.

July — Trasimeno Music Festival

World-class chamber music comes to Teatro Caporali for the festival's opening concert. Additional performances take place at venues around Lake Trasimeno throughout July.

August — Palio dei Terzieri (nearby)

Just 15km away in Città della Pieve, the Palio dei Terzieri is one of Umbria's finest medieval festivals. An archery competition between the town's three quarters, accompanied by historical costumes, Renaissance music, and traditional taverne serving local food.

September — Pan Opera Festival

Chamber opera performed in Italy's most intimate theatre. The Pan Opera Festival fills Teatro Caporali (24 seats per box, 24 boxes) with music that feels impossibly close. Organised by the Téathron Musikè Association. Book well in advance — performances sell out.

September — Wine Festival

The second week of September, outdoor tables fill the centro storico for the Festa del Vino. Local wines, convivial atmosphere, the village at full festive pitch.
